Paramount Studio Heads Did Not Like Martin Scorsese’s New Take on The Film
Martin Scorsesepartnered with Paramount Pictures to adapt David Grann’s 2017 bookKillers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.The studio heads wanted the film to be a procedural drama majorly focusing on the FBI’s investigation of the mysterious murders of the Osage people.
Due toLeonardo DiCaprio‘s suggestions, Scorsese and Eric Roth changed the story and placed it through the point of view of the Osage people in 1940s Oklahoma. Paramount’s studio heads did not like this approach and they backed out of the project. Scorsese talked about this aspect toThe Irish Timessaying,

“Myself and Eric Roth talked about telling the story from the point of view of the bureau agents coming in to investigate. After two years of working on the script, Leo came to me and asked, ‘Where is the heart of this story?’ I had had meetings and dinners with the Osage, and I thought, ‘Well, there’s the story.’ The real story, we felt, was not necessarily coming from the outside, with the bureau, but rather from the inside, from Oklahoma.”
Scorsese, while talking to theWall Street Journal, remembered the studio execs telling him“We backed the other version, we can’t back this one”. They had also backed out from Scorsese’s previous filmThe Irishmanwhich was taken up and financed by Netflix. Paramount Pictures later agreed to co-distributeKillers of the Flower Moonwhen Apple decided to finance the film.

Martin Scorsese Says Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro Work Differently
Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are reuniting on-screen after almost 30 years inKillers of the Flower Moon. They had previously worked together in 1993’sThis Boy’s Life. They both are also reuniting with Martin Scorsese who has worked with them many times. Scorsese recently talked about the difference in how he approaches each actor and how they individually work differently. He said, (viaEntertainment Weekly)
“Bob introduced me to Leo years ago. Turns out that when Leo and I started to work together, I discovered we had similar sensibilities that Bob and I had. He was also brave enough to go to places the way that Bob would — difficult places. [He had] a fearlessness about performing and trying anything.

I found I could work with [Leo] if I talked with him a lot. His method for me is a method of constant conversation, constant exploration. With De Niro, it’s a little different. Yes, there’s talking, but then there’s quiet. … So, the two together played off each other so beautifully.”
Killers of the Flower Moonhas been released in theaters on July 27, 2025. Scorsese and DiCaprio are working yet again for the seventh time forThe Wagerwhich is based on David Grann’s bookThe Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder.
