The young Johansson never knew that she would get to play an essential part in MCU. And in no time, she plays the role of Black Widow – one of the crucial members of the original 6 Avengers team.
Black Widow has been through quite a complicated journey since her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2010. Portrayed by controversial actress Scarlett Johansson, she was the only female Avenger in the MCU’s first 11 movies.
But now the actress is forever ending her career as Black Widow. In 2021, the American actress announced thatBlack Widow, the movie she is arguably recognized for, will mark the end of her tenure in the Marvel Universe.

Scarlett Johansson’s Farewell to Marvel
Scarlett Johanssonis officially done with Marvel movies. She has described her time with the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a “sausage party” and confirmed that she wouldn’t return for any future movies or TV shows featuring Black Widow.
In 2021, Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney for breach of contract due to the simultaneous release ofBlack Widowin theaters and on Disney+. As initially noted, the agreement guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release, with her compensation linked to box office profits. The situation settled (following the lawsuit), and Johansson returned happily to the sets of MCU. TheLucyactress said:
“I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come,” the actress said at the time after settling her differences with Disney.”
However, appearing onThe Good Podcast, the actress revealed that she will no longer be playing Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow:
“I’m done. Yes, I’m done… Chapter is over. I did all that I had to do. Also, coming back and playing a character again and again like that, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience.”
Reflecting on her experience, theBlack Widowactress remarked that working on Avengers was a blast. She was 26 and single (at that time), and it was a lot of fun.

Scarlett Johansson’s Last Take as Black Widow
Scarlett Johansson definitively denies any future return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stating that the Black Widow chapter has concluded. Her last venture,Black Widowends with Natasha still alive, her hairstyle transitioning to the blonde bob fromInfinity War. She departs to rejoin her fellow Avengers and engage in the ultimate battle against Thanos.
As the story develops, Johansson delivers her final lead role in the MCU withAvengers: Endgame,in which, to undo Thanos’ effects, the Avengers construct a time machine to recover the Infinity Stones.
Black Widow’s journey in the MCU started as a secretive S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. She evolved into a founding Avengers member, faced various escaping situations, and ultimately concluded inAvengers: Endgamewhen she led the Avengers and sacrificed herself to rescue the universe.
Black Widowis now streaming on Disney+.
