Starting with her troubled skin, she said:

“I’ve had really bad skin for most of my twenties – really intense cystic and hormonal acne and often all at once! I stopped being a teenager and the acne carried on in adult life – I was like, what’s happening?! I used all kinds of skincare, including retinol and acids, and that just made everything much worse.”

Every person with acne has a story to tell about how their persistent pimples drove them to desperate measures, which frequently made things much worse. But Mackeywas fortunate to discover what was effective for her skin:

“I try and keep my routine really pared back and exfoliate once a week. I’m lucky to go and get facials with Ada Ooi. That’s obviously a huge treat but it helps to go once every couple of months, and it calms me down too. I’m trying to work on the inside as well [as the outside], and balance everything out so I don’t spend too much on skincare.”

Emma Mackey’s Other Brave Health Revelations

Emma Mackeysaid she has learned to breathe in a profession where perfection is frequently demanded. Additionally, the actress has a distinctive outlook on life, as she described toBritish Vogue:

“I need to learn how to breathe. Every single person I talk to who is a professional in exercise or mediation says that most of us don’t breathe properly. I should also meditate more – I have a very overactive brain and it gets very heated and [fast-paced] so I just need to learn [how to prevent that]. The crosswords are my new thing for all of that, but otherwise I’m just trying to take care of myself more, be more balanced and not stress myself out so much with my own brain.”

The actress, 27, also stressed the importance of embracing a fit lifestyle in addition to skincare regimens. Pilates is her preferred form of exercise, as she stated:

“It’s unoriginal but Pilates is great. I haven’t exercised in the past few weeks, but I’m going to get back on it. This summer I also went up a lot of steps – a lot of them! Turns out steps are really good exercise – you work out the back of your thighs, your butt, your heart, everything! It’s pretty great. That was my only exercise this summer – that, and swimming.I have a really bad back so I need to focus on – and strengthen – my core.”

However, she admitted to having regrets after spending years worrying about her skin. In her words:

“I don’t know if I’ve received anything particular. I just think that less is more. I’ve been so anxious about my skin – I think about it all the time and it made me spiral for years, which sounds really stupid, but it takes up so much headspace when you don’t have good skin. So teaching my brain new habits and trying not to worry about it so much, as well as paring everything back, has honestly been the best thing.”

She last appeared inGreta Gerwig‘s fantasy comedy filmBarbieas Physicist Barbie. The movie received positive reviews and made $1.42 billion, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2023, and the 14th-highest-grossing movie of all time.

Also, she received a nomination for a British Academy Television Award for her breakthrough performance in Laurie Nunn’s comedy-drama seriesSex Education.

Sex Education is available to stream on Netflix.
