Among the rare directors who have loved the comic book industry just as much as any other creations lies Guillermo del Toro who has now been inadvertently drawn into the debate of the currently rising animosity toward Marvel. His recent stop-motion animation,Pinocchio, produced under the banner of the streaming juggernaut, Netflix, was one of the highest-rated and widely acclaimed productions to have come out of the streamer recently.

As such, del Toro’s fan favoritism, which has always ranked high among the masses now asserts some new-found appreciation for the director’s eye for all things animated. And by proxy, the debate has gone on to include the new and highly-successfulPuss in Bootssequel.

Guillermo del Toro’s Animation Revolution is Set For Launch
In the early 2000s, Guillermo del Toro did what most only dared to dream of and dismissed as an impossible option. The director made horror and the supernatural into a genre that was as formidable as it was artistic and marketable to the masses. HisHellboyproduction still stands as a stellar masterpiece and the fandom still waits at the gates forSwamp ThingandFrankensteinto be greenlit and thrown into his lap.
But it is the animation sector that has become the other steadfast pillar that constitutes GDT’s aesthetic reputation. The staggering quality and undeniable creativity that is infused within his projects levels Marvel by a mile. The latter franchise which has recently been more obsessed with quantity than quality has become a point of contention for the masses who have grown to love the CBM industry in the past decade and a half. On the other hand, del Toro has been advocating for animation no longer being limited to a children’s genre but instead a medium that adults can enjoy equally.

The exhaustion that comes with the ever-growing chronology of films and series and special features under Marvel Studios has somewhat contributed to the downgrading in the quality of content that is being offered by the franchise. On the other hand, Guillermo del Toro’s consistent masterpieces have inspired rather than rubbing salt in the wound regarding what a CBM franchise can truly achieve, if only they invested more in their content quality and innovation than in pandering to the masses.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wishwas a surprisingly well-rounded and wholesome experience in an era when the animation industry is floundering under the shadow of CGI and VFX-dominated CBM franchises. Disney’s recent arc under the alternating Bobs has also landed the studio in a sorry state of affairs, and even though the House of Mouse is known for its animation projects, it was Universal who ended up with a Royal Flush this time with itsPuss in Bootssequel.

The Joel Crawford-directed movie, which currently rates at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, is not only being praised unilaterally but also accorded with appreciation and genuine acknowledgment for its quality. This has caused some people to directly draw parallels with Marvel’s uptake with respect to bad CGI and wonky graphics and visual effects in its recent series and movies, not to mention the exhausting formulaic executions and lack of originality at this point.

Probably unrelated to each other, but PiB was just the better movie tbh. They managed to make a deeper story in a kids movie lmao.

If this doesn’t already say enough about the rise of animation against the world of CGI and VFX, then nothing else can. The movement has already begun gaining steam at the grassroots level, and soon, the incredulous rise of the GDT-empowered industry will be witnessed alongside the rise of the already peaking “Marvel fatigue.”
