In 1980, he failed an audition forSaturday Night Live(SNL), which led to the start of his own stage show at the Roxy Theater starring Pee-wee Herman.

While talking about his audition withEntertainment Weekly, Reubens said, “It really seemed like I was going to be on SNL. It was a year Lorne Michaels did not produce. I walked in the room, [saw comic Gilbert Gottfried], and I said, ”It’s not going to be both of us. We’re the same type of performer.” I knew then I wasn’t going to get it.”

He was indeed right; the role went to Gilbert Gottfried. After that, Reubens borrowed $5,000 from his parents and produced the stage show. His hard work paid off, and the show not only appealed to adults but also children.

In 1985, Renbens made a debut with his filmPee-wee’s Big Adventure,directed by Tim Burton. After the commercial success of the film, he made his return three years later in a follow-up film,Big Top Pee-wee.

People’s favorite character, who was known for his bright red bowtie, grey suit, and flattop haircut, fought a silent battle with cancer for six years. Reubens never made his bout public until July 11, 2025, when he posted a message for his followers on Instagram. He said, “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years”.

His social media statement also said, “I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

The actor’s life and career also encountered controversies in the 1990s and 2000s. In 1991, he was charged with indecent behavior while watching a film at an adult movie theater. Reubens denied the charges, but the media picked them up, which led to the removal of Pee-wee toys by Toys “R” Us and the suspension of the Pee-wee video from its Hollywood studio tour.
