The Joker is arguably Batman’s most popular and iconic foe, and director Matt Reeves’ take on the Dark Knight introduced viewers to Barry Keoghan’s iteration of the Clown Prince of Crime. Although Keoghan only had a small cameo in 2022’sThe Batman, the actor has been poised to have a larger presence in the upcoming sequel to the Robert Pattinson-led film.

While promoting his recent film,Saltburn, Keoghan spoke about the possibility of returning for the sequel. Moreover, Keoghan’s words teased fans of the popular DC Comics franchise about the Joker’s return to the big screen in the forthcoming second installment.

Barry Keoghan Hints at Returning ForThe Batman – Part II

Barry Keoghan’s recent filmSaltburn,directed byEmerald Fennell, has received positive reviews from critics. While promoting the movie, Keoghan was asked about his potential involvement in the upcoming sequel ofThe Batman,withRobert Pattinsonset to reprise his role as the Dark Knight. Keoghan expressed his excitement for returning to the DC Comics world while speaking toEtalk.

“I can’t really say anything about that … It would be exciting, wouldn’t it? To see the Joker come to life again. My smile says all, you know what I mean?”

While Keoghan’s words do not outright confirm his return as the iconic supervillain, there is a strong possibility that the actor will reprise the role for the sequel. Moreover, Keoghan directly addressing the possibility of returning and sharing his excitement to portray the Joker on the big screen are positive signs despite the actor himself playing coy.

Initially credited as “Unseen Arkham Prisoner,” Keoghan’s character in the movie was later confirmed by director Matt Reeves to be none other than the Joker. Reeves also revealed a scene featuring Keoghan’s Joker interacting with Pattinson’s Batman, which was cut from the movie. As a result, fans have been anticipating seeing the Batman vs Joker matchup in the sequel.

The Batman – Part IIFilming Has Been Delayed

The strong critical reception and box office success of The Batman fueled the possibility of a second installment. The sequel, titledThe Batman – Part II, was officially announced at CinemaCon in April 2022. Reeves and Pattinson were confirmed to return, and Mattson Tomlin was announced as a co-writer. However, other cast members, including Barry Keoghan, have yet to be confirmed for the sequel. The sequel was expected to start principal photography in November 2023 in England.

However, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike likely affected the planned production start date. According toreports, filming for the sequel was delayed and is now expected to commence sometime in March 2024. While plot details for the sequel are being kept under wraps, the villain Clayface and Batman’s protege, Dick Grayson, were heavily rumored to appear in the second installment.

The Batman – Part II is currently scheduled to be released on August 17, 2025. Therefore, if Keoghan’s Joker factors into the sequel, fans will have to wait a while before seeing the actor face off with Batman.
