Godzilla Minus Onehas taken the world by storm, cementing itself as the quintessential Godzilla film of the generation, leaving Legendary’s MonsterVerse in the dust. The film has not only delivered a brilliant Kaiju horror movie but also a poignant story about its human characters, something that Kaiju films have struggled with in their recent offerings.

The film has become known for its drama, being set after World War 2, in a similar time frame of Christopher Nolan’sOppenheimer. Aside from being great dramas, it seems the films have tickled fans’ fancies about how oddly connected the films are, ironically of course. Fans have taken to social media to voice their amusement.

Godzilla Minus One and Oppenheimer are oddly connected

While the subject matter that both films deal with is not a laughing matter, fans have nonetheless found an amusing connection between the two films. Both films are masterfully crafted and are considered serious takes on the horrors that come with war. But the connection that fans have discovered drives the conversation into a much lighter tone.

Kinda fitting since Godzilla would be Oppenheimer’s direct sequel

Godzilla Minus One is the sequel to Oppenheimer you didn’t know you needed. It’s a brilliant, fresh take on the creature as well as post WWII Japan that gives us an unapologetic depiction of what nuclear weapons can do to a country. 9/10. Would recommendpic.twitter.com/6Lc35pQQ8R

I’m sure you’ll be hearing this more in the next couple of weeks. But the perfect double feature is Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One! When Oppenheimer ends begins playing Godzilla Minus One!pic.twitter.com/msEIftcgBE

These wild reactions to the two films have been rampant on social media, building up a Barbenheimer-type phenomenon around the two films. This is not to say that people are having fun with the counterprogramming aspect of the films, but fans are speculating that the two films would make for an excellent double feature.

Fans are extending their support toGodzilla Minus OneandOppenheimer

Godzilla Minus OneandOppenheimerare no doubt films that deserve a lot of praise. Fans, despite all the jokes that are being belted online, are also gunning for the films to be pushed for the Best Picture nominations of the year. Both films are nuanced explorations of the horrors of World War 2. While one takes a more cinematic approach to the subject matter, the other film looks at it from the lens of allegory.

The year 2023, saw some really great films, critically and commercially. It remains to be seen which films are picked up for nominations while which films are snubbed come Oscar season. Films such asGodzilla Minus One,Oppenheimer,BarbieandThe Killers of the Flower Moonare sure to be front runners this awards season, as the films have not only delivered on their deeply existential subject matter, but also found a way to engage audiences meaningfully, beyond just spectacle and VFX.
