An extended scene fromShazam 2indicates thatJustice Leaguecould no longer be a canon in the DCU. After James Gunn took over as the co-CEO of DC Studios, fans expected him to continue Zack Snyder’s DCEU, most probably with aMan of Steelsequel, marking the return of Henry Cavill as Superman. However, the filmmaker had his own plans, as he announced that he plans to develop his own DCU by rebooting the existing universe. He also said that it will be a soft reboot, and some of the existing cast could continue under the new DCU as well.

This led many fans to expect that Snyderverse films could serve as a canon of the new DCU. However, an extended scene fromShazam! Fury of the Godsdoes not indicate that the co-CEOs have plans to canonize Justice League with the new DCU.

Almost a month after the release ofShazam! Fury of the Gods,a Twitter user shared a deleted extended scene from the sequel. The extended scene fromZachary Levi’sShazam 2features Billy and Freddy in a conversation where Billy questions Freddy about going solo without the rest of them.

He then goes on to justify his actions and mentions Wonder Woman, before saying,“When someone says Gotham City, who do you think of? You think of Batman because it’s a one supe town.”Freddy also mentions that they would team up in the wake of threats like“giant portals in the sky, weird insect-like drone armies, pissed off aliens.”

It directly refers to Darkseid’s insectile Parademon army, who tried to conquer the Earth during the events of the DC filmJustice League. However, the scene was edited out of the final cut, which has led to the belief that the events ofJustice Leaguewill be decanonized from the new DCU.

Justice LeagueWould Not be Canon to the New DCU

Considering the scene, which includes mentions ofJustice Leaguevillains, was removed fromShazam 2’sfinal theatrical cut, it is assumed thatJames Gunnmay not have plans to keepJustice Leagueor the Snyderverse as a canon to the new DCU.

The upcoming DC filmThe Flashwill reboot the existing universe, known as DC Extended Universe, and the following films are expected to be a part of the new DCU. However, it is still not confirmed ifAquaman and the Lost Islandwill fit under the new universe.

Cutting out the scene from the final version also raises the question ifShazam 2takes place before or after the events ofThe Flash. And the appearance of Wonder Woman and some characters fromPeacemakerhas made it only more confusing.

WhileShazam 2star Zachary Levi seemed confident about his future, he also mentioned that it depends on the film’s performance, which wasn’t too impressive.
