Peacemaker Season 2is releasing on HBO Max tomorrow. And one of the biggest questions fans are asking is whether Peacemaker is a hero, an anti-hero, or a villain in DC comics. The answer isn’t nearly as simple as you might expect, because Christopher Smith has been in a morally gray area for quite some time.
What Is Peacemaker’s Origin Story in DC Comics
You meet Christopher Smith for the first time in a tragic and twisted backstory. He is the son of a Nazi concentration camp commander, a past that haunted him from childhood. His life was scarred early after witnessing his father’s suicide while imprisoned for war crimes.
Traumatized by such an experience, Smith later enlisted in the U.S. military, only to be court-martialed for killing civilians. Later, he served time in prison before inheriting his family’s wealth and becoming the Peacemaker, a vigilante who believed that peace could come at any price.

Unlike most superheroes, his methods were extreme. He loved peace so much that he would kill for it. Peacemaker’s unstable mind only worsened things, haunted by visions of his father and convinced that the voices of those he killed echoed inside his helmet.
Is Peacemaker a Villain or Anti-Hero?
Technically, you might call Peacemaker a villain. He murders ruthlessly and doesn’t follow a traditional heroic code, instead enforcing peace through lethal means. James Gunn himself has called him “a guy who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he needs to kill along the way.” John Cena once described him in an interview as “a douchey Captain America.”
The hook is that Peacemaker is not driven by greed, revenge, or self-interest like many DC villains. Instead, his actions come from a twisted sense of doing good. That makes him different from your classic bad guys. He’s a more morally nuanced character who uses villainous methods in pursuit of what he sees as a greater cause.
In many ways, yes. His lack of conscience and frequent resort to violence often place him closer to the villain category. But at the same time, he is not evil. He’s one of those rare characters who walks the line between hero and villain, and is therefore unpredictable and fascinating to watch.
As Season 2 gets closer, it’s exactly this moral ambiguity that keeps audiences hooked. He’s not black or white, he’s every shade of gray, and that’s why fans can’t stop watching him.
