Chris Pratt is the only person who can currently be visualized in the role of Star-Lord, but did you know that the actor initially turned down the role? When first given the chance to audition for what might have been one of his more well-known films, theWantedstar initially declined. We are indeed discussing theGuardians of the Galaxyfrom the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yet why? Pratt once admitted that his crippling inferiority complex nearly led him to decline the ground-breaking role of Star-Lord in the hugely popular James Gunn 2014 film. The actor also discussed the more troubling aspects of his journey in one of his earlier interviews, sharing the worries that nearly made him turn down the chance of a lifetime.

Chris Pratt Explained Why He Nearly Refused to Play Star-Lord
Chris Pratt’s performance in the third-highest-grossing film of 2014 was praised by critics and fans alike. However, he initially declined the role out of concern that any attempt to land the part would be unsuccessful, similar to a failedG.I. Joeaudition a few years prior.Esquire’s 2014 cover story quoted the actor as:
“WhenGuardians of the Galaxywas pitched to me, I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ I just didn’t picture myself getting the role. I didn’t want to go and embarrass myself like I did when I auditioned forG.I. Joea couple of years previously. I went in there, and halfway through I saw the director’s eyes just glaze over. It made sense — I was a little heavy and out of shape. I was not gonna play someone from G.I. Joe. I did not look like a G.I. Joe action figure come to life.”

Pratt, who gained fame by getting in shape for the role of Peter Quill (or Star-Lord),claimed that the transformation has made him feel like a real-life superhero:
“I can do 40-inch box jumps now. Action-hero physical stuff. Jumping that high feels really good. You see a giant hillside, and you think, I wanna get up that. You see a building, you think, I could climb that. When you get in shape, the world around you becomes things you wanna jump on and climb up.”

ThePassengersStar Had A ‘Rough Run’ With Marvel
Chris Pratt talked candidly about the challenging casting process he went through in order to get roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The 44-year-old actor admitted during his appearance onJimmy KimmelLivethat he had a“rough run”of auditioning for and being rejected from several roles, including those in theCaptain AmericaandThorfilms.
The actor, 44, went on to so many different Marvel auditions that he almost gave up before getting the character of Star-Lord inGuardians of the Galaxy:

“I auditioned for them all. I had a rough run with Marvel. I auditioned for Thor, but not even to be Thor — but to be one of the sidekick guys, and I didn’t get a callback. It got to the point where I was never gonna audition for Marvel again. I was like, ‘This is stupid; I’m never gonna be in a Marvel movie’.”
In addition to auditioning for Marvel characters, he also tried out for other heroic roles in other movies, but alas, it appears that he was unsuccessful. These rejections led him to believe that he lacked the“it-factor”they were looking for. To quote Pratt:
“And it was not only just Marvel things but there have been a lot of heroic characters in various films… Not DC characters, but like, you know, ‘Star Trek’ or ‘Avatar’. Anything that was like, ‘This guy walks in and he’s got the it-factor.’ Over and over again I was like, ‘Well, I definitely don’t have that it-factor they’re looking for because they don’t even want me to come back.’”
Pratt became an A-list celebrity after he was cast as Star-Lord inGuardians of the Galaxyand became the face of theJurassic Worldtrilogy (2015–2022) for Universal Pictures. Hewill next be seen as Keats in Anthony and Joe Russo’s upcoming science fiction adventure filmThe Electric State.
All threeGuardians of the Galaxyfilms are available on Disney Plus.
