Natalie Portman Said No to Nude Scenes After the 2007 Wes Anderson Short FilmHotel Chevalier
In 2007,Natalie Portmanstarred in Wes Anderson’s 13-minute short filmHotel Chevalierwhich acts as a prologue to Anderson’s featureThe Darjeeling Limited. Portman played the role of Jack’s (Jason Schwartzman) estranged lover.
In an interview withThe Guardianfollowing the release ofHotel Chevalier, Portman candidly shared her thoughts on the public’s fixation on the nude scene.
She stated, “The thing is – and maybe I’ve brought it on myself by talking about nudity so much – it’s still the thing that people talk about more than the short.”
Portman expressed her regret over the fact that discussions surrounding the film were dominated by n*dity, overshadowing the meticulous planning and creativity invested by director Wes Anderson.
“It’s not that I regret the actual thing,” she continued.
“But it really depresses me that what I think is a wonderful film, that I’m really happy with – and Wes put a lot of time and energy into planning shots and writing the script, it’s very minimal, very exact – and then at the end literally half of any article or review about it has been about the nudity.”
“And that’s the thing that makes me think maybe I shouldn’t have done it,” she commented.
She elsewhere in the interview shared that though nudity is obviously our natural state, sometimes where the issue arises is; when people use what the actors had done on screen to fulfill different purposes.
