Doctor Strange Not Knowing Thanos Does Not Make Sense

Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Doctor Strange slowly became The Master of the Mystic Arts in his 2016 solo film. The character proved to be integral in the battle against Thanos and his minions inAvengers: Infinity Warand the events of the film. However, one scene from the film continues to puzzle fans due to a certain illogical narrative thread.

In the film, when Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner crashes into the Sanctum Sanctorum, he tells Doctor Strange that Thanos is coming. However, he does not recognize who Thanos is. This does not make sense as The Mad Titan has been looming over the MCU since 2012’sThe Avengers.

Cumberbatch’s character also makes one significant statement that contradicts his non-awareness of who Thanos is. InThor: Ragnarok, Loki, and Thor meet Doctor Strange who helps them in finding their father. Strange specifically tells Thor,

“So, I keep a watch list of individuals and beings from other realms that may be a threat to this world. Your adopted brother, Loki, is one of these beings.”

Thanos has been teased as the ultimate threat from the first Avengers film. The fact that Doctor Strange was not aware of who Thanos was inAvengers: Infinity Warfeels contradictory with how the character has been set up to that point. This scenario can be taken as one of the many narrative plotholes and big continuity errors in the MCU.
