This year has been quite disappointing in the release of major superhero movies. However, the turf war on the television segment has been quite surprising. As Marvel Studios is aggressively pursuing its dominion through Disney+ shows, DC has been quick to make its presence felt too. And this time, it’s Green Lantern.

This year, the online streaming platform HBO Max was widely discussed when it decided to re-release Zack Snyder’sJustice League: Snyder Cut. As the streaming platform is slowly gaining recognition, the WarnerMedia owned entity has now officially confirmed that a Green Lantern show will be soon released on the platform.
Last year, the reports of a Green Lantern show made the rounds when Greg Berlanti announced the project. After a year, the Green Lantern show has finally been confirmed with Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith on board as showrunners.

Marc Guggenheim is best known for his work on CW’sArrowandLegends of Tomorrow. He has also worked on the Ryan Reynolds starringGreen Lantern(2011) where he served as a screenwriter alongside Greg Berlanti. Guggenheim has also previously worked as the screenwriter onPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Currently, he is serving as an executive producer and writer on the hit CW showSupergirl.
Seth Grahame-Smith is an American novelist best known for his New York Times best-selling novelsPride and Prejudice and ZombiesandAbraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, both of which have been adapted as movies. Grahame-Smith has previously worked as the screenwriter on Tim Burton’sDark Shadows. In recent years, he has served as a producer on Andy Muschietti’sItandIt Chapter Two.
The upcoming Green Lantern show has also revealed a sneak-peek into its plot before it enters production. The show will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and Alan Scott — Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man — and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Kilowog, and will also introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps. According to reports, HBO Max has ordered 10 episodes each with one-hour long runtime.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Earlier in August, the DC Extended Universe made everything canon in the DC Fandome event. As Andy Muschietti’s upcomingThe Flashis set to explore the DC multiverse, it will be interesting to see in which universe does the Green Lantern show exists.

Interestingly, the show has revealed the set of Earth-based Green Lanterns who will be making their appearance. However, the one missing from the list is the most popular Green Lantern and member of the Justice League, Hal Jordan.
Previously, comic-book writer and former Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns was attached to a live-action movie titledGreen Lantern Corpswhich was set to exist in the DC Extended Universe. As the upcoming HBO Max show has skipped Hal Jordan in its roster of Green Lanterns, the popular hero might be reserved for a big-screen appearance.
Currently, HBO Max is the home to DC showsHarley Quinn,Titans, andDoom Patrol. The online streaming platform has confirmed a few other DC shows for the future which includesGotham PD, with Matt Reeves and Terrence Winters attached to the project. The show is set inThe Batmanuniverse which is set to release in 2022.
