In the MCU, Iron Man and Captain America played by Hollywood stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans respectively, are two characters who are intrinsically intertwined through their shared and opposing ideals throughout their narrative arcs. While both superheroes initially work together as part of the Avengers ensemble, their differing value systems clash and reach a saturation point inCaptain America: Civil Warwhere they find themselves on opposite sides of the Sokovia Accords.

While both characters finished as heroes after the culmination of theAvengersseries, the personal friction that saw them face off inCaptain America: Civil War, was left unresolved, with both characters not featuring in the next phases of the MCU. Now, with the introduction of the Illuminati whose actions were also instrumental in the feud between Iron Man and Captain America, speculations are rife about Robert Downey Jr. And Chris Evans reprising their iconic roles in the future.

Could Robert Downey Jr. And Chris Evans Lock Horns Once More In The MCU?

The main bone of contention betweenRobert Downey Jr.’sIron Man andChris Evans’Captain America that led to their fractured relationship inCaptain America: Civil War, was their opposing standpoints on the Sokovia Accords that chose to use superheroes as weapons and not people. With Tony Stark aka Iron Man backing this move and Captain America being against it, the two Avengers’ working relationship ended with their characters seemingly coming a full circle afterAvengers: Endgame.

But a speculative theory floating around in the MCU is that both Evans and Downey Jr. could lock horns once more in the future with the introduction of the Illuminati. This secret society of Marvel superheroes comprising Tony Stark, Dr. Strange, Professor Charles Xavier, Black Bolt, Namor, and Mr. Fantastic, have been seen as a controversial group whose actions and opinions are not necessarily shared by other members of their fraternity. With their official introduction into the MCU inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there are reports that their possible future appearance in the MCU franchise could trigger a reunion between Captain America and Tony Stark.

This then means that Robert Downey Jr. And Chris Evans could be back to take their characters a full circle or probably drive a further wedge into their already complicated relationship that was brought on by their differing views on the role of superheroes, with Tony Stark’s work at Illuminati contrasting with Steve Rogers’ value systems. While all these are still speculative theories, fans of Evans and Downey Jr. would hope that this, in fact, becomes a reality either through aCivil War 2film or withAvengers: Secret Warsas the rumors are currently suggesting.
