Actress Halle Berry is one of the most prominent African-American actresses working in the industry. She has made a mark in Hollywood by being the first black actress to win an Academy Award for Best Actor after her performance inMonster’s Ball. Once, while working with prominent director Spike Lee, she got into an argument when he insinuated that her parents divorced due to their interracial relationship.

Before she became known to the world as Storm in theX-Menfranchise, Halle Berry started her career as a model. She was born in Cleveland and her parents worked at a psychiatric ward. Her mother was Caucasian an English immigrant while her father was African-American. Her parents divorced when Berry was four years old.
Berry has revealed that her father used to beat her mother on multiple occasions. TheCatwomanactress has also mentioned how being a child of an interracial couple has affected her childhood.

Berry has mentioned how she longed to see characters who looked like her to be represented on screen and found them on TV. She said,
“Seeing Diahann Carroll being the star of a show and playing a mother who was a nurse, who was educated, who was beautiful, just rearranged me and it made me realize I had value, that I could turn to every week, a woman that looked like who I would aspire to be when I grew up.”
The actress also mentioned that her mother had been very liberal during her upbringing. Berry has mentioned that she did not feel ‘white’ despite being raised by a white woman.

Spike Lee’s Controversial Comments On Halle Berry’s Heritage
Her ethnic identity is very important to Halle Berry and she has often made statements regarding the same. When she was asked about her dating outside her race, she said that she does not want people to think that she has abandoned her black identity just because she has dated outside her race. She said,
“I have never been more clear about who I am as a black woman. The people I have dated sort of hold up a mirror to me and help me realize more of who I really am.”
She also vehemently opposed a controversial viewpoint that director Spike Lee had once told her in her cinematic debut. Berry had a small role in the filmJungle Fever, in which she starred as a drug addict, who is in a relationship with Samuel L. Jackson’s character. Many critics have pointed out that Spike Lee speaks about the nature of interracial relationships inJungle Feverand that his point of view suggests that they do not work.

Halle Berry mentioned that she did not believe in that ideology and that she had gotten into an argument with the director while they were filming. In her biography, Berry said,
“He said my parents divorced because Black/White love can never work. I told Spike that that was just his warped and twisted point of view. The reality was that my parents loved each other…they split up because of my father’s drinking.”
Spike Lee has in turn refuted the claims by critics that his film propagated that ideology and said that it offers a commentary on how race plays in a relationship.
