Working with genius actors has a perk of its own. They usually end up making the movies they star in a little better. Here are 15 actors who pitched ideas to change their characters in movies and made them better:

Catherine O’Hara came up with Moira’s iconic accent inSCHITT’S CREEK. She apparently showed up all prepared to the set to alter her character, with photos and looks of the British socialite Daphne Guinness.
Margot Robbie altered the scene where her character had to seduce Leo’s character inTHE WOLF OF WALL STREET. Going by the script, Robbie was supposed to appear in the doorway wearing a robe. However, she insisted on stripping naked for the scene.
John Krasinski gave the idea of casting a deaf actress to play Regan inA QUIET PLACE. He had Millicent Simmonds in mind who lost her hearing ability as a baby. She was able to teach the entire cast sign language and gave more depth to the film.
Olivia Munn insisted her character wouldn’t wear turtlenecks in the TV showNEWSROOM. The actress, who played Sloan Sabbith in the show, didn’t want her character to lose her femininity and dress too conservatively.
Scarlett Johannson wasn’t in favour of doingBLACK WIDOWif it was going to be an origin story. “I did not want it to be an origin story. I did not want it to be an espionage story. I didn’t want it to feel superficial at all. I only wanted to do it if it actually fit where I was with that character,” she said.
Emma Corrin, who plays Princess Diana inTHE CROWNinsisted they portray the late princess’s struggles with bulimia in a subtle manner. Emma said, “I felt that if we were trying to depict bulimia in an honest way, we had to actually show it, otherwise it’s a disservice to anyone who has been through that.”
Dwayne Johnson was reluctant to let his gorilla friend die inRAMPAGE. In the original ending, George the gorilla was supposed to die, but The Rock said he didn’t want a sad ending. He told the makers that if they wanted to kill the gorilla, they’d have to find another actor.
Dacre Montgomery pitched the idea of giving Billy a sad backstory to show where he came from inSTRANGER THINGS 3“The main element was Billy’s biological mother. That was something I was insistent on having included, to add to his backstory and to see the pain his mother caused him by leaving”, said Dacre
Reese Witherspoon was only 22 when she was cast as Annette Hargrove inCruel Intentions. She apparently helped write all of her character’s dialogue with Writer-director Roger Kumble
The entire look for Lucius Malfoy inHARRY POTTERwas Jason Isaacs’ idea. “I went to the set, and they had this idea of me wearing a pinstripe suit, short black-and-white hair.” He asked the prop team for a long white wig, wizard robes, and a walking stick for him to pull out his wand.
Cate Blanchett insisted on changing her character’s name inOCEAN’S 8. Her character was called Cate in the script but then she told the director that they shouldn’t name the character after her.
It was Angelina Jolie’s idea to get covered in prosthetics in order to make her character look scary inMALEFICENT. Disney wasn’t initially keen on covering Jolie up with stuff, but the actress convinced the executives that her character will still retain her beauty with a nosepiece, molars, and strange-looking cheekbones.
James Spader added hat to his character inTHE BLACKLIST. The showrunners were initially against the idea but Spader convinced them that his character would wear a hat, a detail that has now become iconic.
Chris Hemsworth fought with the directors to keep his iconic potbelly for a little while longer inAVENGERS: ENDGAME. “Lebowski Thor” was supposed to have a lot less plot time before getting fit again, but Hemsworth wasn’t happy with it. He wanted that part of Thor’s journey extended.
