While directing the 1993 movieSchindler’s List,Spielberg was already in an era of pain and suffering since that was one of the themes of the film. Denzel Washington and director John Lee Hancock came up with a script for a movie titledThe Little Things.Based on an investigation into several grisly murders in a town, the movie was along the lines of David Fincher’sSe7en.As per Hancock, Spielberg had to reject the movie because he didn’t want to go back to that zone again (viaCinemaBlend).
“Steven really liked A Perfect World, my script for it. And so before we ever went into production on A Perfect World, he came to me and said, ‘Let’s do a blind picture deal. … Let’s just do it at Warner Brothers. I wrote a long outline and then talked to him on the phone about it after he read it. And I think I faxed him the outline.”

John Lee Hancock further continued,
“He really liked it. He said, ‘This is really, really good storytelling. It’s just too dark for me right now. I’m finishing Schindler’s List. I can’t live in this dark world again.’ And I understood that completely.”
As a result, the film was not made as Hancock and Denzel Washington moved on to other projects. It wasn’t until 2021 when director Hancock picked up the script again and cast Jared Leto, Rami Malek, and Denzel Washington in the lead roles to create the 2021 film,The Little Things.
